… Called to Teach…

What a great mission, to know that you are called to be a teacher, especially in a Christian school.

Remember this, when you stand in front of your students, at that moment in time you are the most important person in their lives. Your actions, attitudes and words can have an amazing impact on their lives.

The responsibility that comes with the designation TEACHER can be a burden… or a passion! In a Christian school especially, that passion as God’s messenger can have eternal consequences.

Your students will leave your classroom and get on with the rest of life.

When they leave, they will take part of you with them.

Will that part of you…

* direct them to God?
* encourage them to excel?
* impassion them to mission?

You do get it, don’t you?

All this God-stuff puts an amazing and awesome impetus on teaching in a Christian school. Or at least it should.

We must not be content with being “as good as the public school.” We must transcend that measuring stick and create one of our own.

It is extremely critical that we grab hold of the idea that we “are more than conquerors.”

We cannot become content with apathy, for a growing apathy diminishes the ability to think critically. Once our critical thinking becomes moldy with apathy, we run the extreme risk of becoming apathetic towards God.

That’s why we have entered this profession called teaching. Our passion is to help achieve a sense of radical excellence that makes Christian school educators unique in the world of learning and leading.

It is our passion to help those in Christian schools to catch the vision of what it will take to set a standard rather than reach a secular standard that has been shown repeatedly to be infused with fatal flaws.

To create our own unique identity in the world of learning, we need to focus on some rather foundational items.

* seek radical excellence by returning to traditional values
* develop outstanding leadership that is infused with courageous vision
* create schools that are sharply focused on and committed to scripturally based mission statements

Speaking of passion, three teachers with over sixty years of combined service in several Christian schools nationwide, both as classroom teachers and administrators, have reached one inescapable conclusion.

We have begun a journey towards creating a national movement that promotes a system of excellence, possesses a unique identity and encourages mission-focused operation. This growing action MUST be ignited and fueled by teachers and administrators who develop a genuinely professional dialogue system that works.

To that end, we are encouraging Christian teachers to join us in developing a national forum of communication that will eventually enable us to create a local voice that is respected and listened to. You can read more about our efforts by checking out the site noted in my author bio and reading a document called “The PACT Report” that develops the concept of a Professional Association of Christian Teachers.

So the charge is simple.

Keep the Faith, Fight the Fight.

John Hitchcock is enthusiastically involved in his forty-fifth year in classrooms, both in New York State and California. Half his career has been in Christian Schools and the other half in Public Schools. He is also an adjunct professor in a four-year university.

Read more about his personal and corporate mission to raise the “learning level” of students to a point of Radical Excellence by returning to the use of Traditional Values.

You have probably contemplated many reasons to homeschool your children. Some of your reasons may revolve around medical problems, lifestyle, or a better education. Christian homeschooling is another choice that is becoming more and more popular. Parents like the idea of supervising their own children’s learning and encouraging Christian values along the way.

While absolute values are on the decline in public education, you have the opportunity to teach right from home in your homeschool.If you are a Christian and considering Christian homeschooling, you may want to think about a few things. First of all, if the intolerance of your religious preference in public school is troubling you, this might be a good decision. You have the freedom in your home to teach about God and the Bible along with your daily instruction. You don’t have to worry about saying “God” and being criticized.

On the other hand, this may not be a great enough reason to homeschool your children. When a child’s beliefs are practiced in a school setting, they can learn how to interact with others who are non-Christians. They can also be a good example to others and show them what Christians are really like.

There are also Christian private schools that use Christian teachings and doctrines in their curriculum. However, these types of schools are usually expensive. This makes the choice of Christian homeschooling a rational decision.

Other motives for homeschooling your children may be because of unsafe schools, or not wanting your children to change school after school if your family is in the military. If you find that your reasoning for homeschooling fits into a couple of categories, it is definitely an option you might want to consider.

If want to homeschool your children, Christian homeschooling is a great option, especially if you want to instill values into their education. There are many support groups that can help you decide on curriculum. Some support groups can help you determine how to help your children socialize, while others support you emotionally.

There are many different reasons you could choose to home school your children. Some choose it because of lifestyle. Others because of medical problems. Christian home schooling presents yet another option. Christian home schooling has increased in popularity, because this gives parents a way to monitor what their children are learning and to instill Christian values in them.

Are you a Christian and wondering if home schooling is right for you? Well consider this. If being in a world where displaying your religious preference in public schools is becoming less tolerated is something that bothers you, Christian home schooling is a good alternative. It presents an opportunity for you to incorporate learning about the Bible and God within your daily lessons.

However, this may not be enough of a reason to home school your children. A disadvantage is that it may shelter them from interacting socially with children their own age. Being around non-Christians is also a great way to teach a child tolerance. Also, there are Christian schools that incorporate Christian teachings within their curriculum. However, tuition to a private school is not always affordable. This makes Christian home schooling a logical option.

There are other reasons to home school. Some public schools may be located in areas that are unsafe. If you are a Christian missionary, it doesn’t always make sense to split up your family, especially if you need to move to a foreign country. You may also be in the military and need to move once or twice a year. Changing schools constantly can be traumatic to a child.

If you decide to home school your children, there are a lot of Christian home schooling support groups that can help you choose a good curriculum and offer other forms of support. Some encourage socializing, while others support you emotionally. You can find Christian home schooling support groups online, or you can ask some local churches.

Everyday homeschooling is becoming more popular, especially among Christian families. Consider these concepts about Christian homeschooling to help decide if homeschooling is right for your children.

Stated in the bible is the text that children will not stray from what they are taught. Proverbs 22:6 argues well on this, placing a high value on a child’s education: ‘train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.’ One verse in particular stands out as a clear argument for raising children to be upright, and will definitely stand out to parents thinking about homeschooling their children. If you desire that your young ones have Christian values throughout their life, it will likely begin with Christian education very early in their life. Homeschooling is another option to think about if you feel a public school does not meet your child’s needs.

Homeschooling permits you to have more influence on your kids. Convenience may be argued as an advantage of public schools, but homeschooling has its bonuses as well. Educating your child in your Christian home and spending more time with your children is certainly a bonus of homeschooling. Your child will see you modeling Christian morals and values more often if that is how you behave around them. The way you behave will have more of an outcome on your kids, if you have more time to persuade them in your Christian customs. Homeschooling allows parents to raise their children learning the gospel and away from the effects of public school peers and teachers.

More lessons can have a central religious theme. Homeschooled kids get more religious teaching than at public school. This is for the reason that the parent can exercise more control over the coaching imparted. Public schools have to stay on track with the government curriculum while homeschooling is much more lenient. In homeschool, you can put your beliefs about Christ into any lesson you like. You won’t have to worry about school teaching the subject of evolution in biology, you can teach creationism. Lessons about history can refer to stories of Jesus’ time. Tithing could also be a good subject for math class. Control your own study program for your child during a homeschooling lesson, without any backlash from the school board or administration. You will have peace of mind that your child will receive exactly the education that you want him to have.

Avoid bad influences with homeschooling. Public school contains children from a variety of backgrounds and upbringings. They will be exposed to alcohol, drugs, pornography, and criminal behavior at open schools. Peer pressure is a potent force for your young student to contend with in public schools. At home in your care, your child will be less likely to fall off of the path of the Lord. Homeschool helps Christian parents keep a track of the behavior of their children. Christian parents have many choices for their children when they are taught at home.

There are many great reasons for removing your children from the public school system, especially with the variety of homeschooling resources available to Christian parents.

Christian Distance education is no longer only an occasional correspondence course related to a specific subject or book of the Bible. Today, accredited Christian school and colleges offer degree programs. Christian distance education can meet the requirements for high school graduates, ministers, and laymen wanting a Christian-based degree in psychology or counseling.

Many home schooling parents choose Christian distance education as an alternative to public schooling. The curriculum is based upon Christian principles and beliefs. The Bible is the foundation for all subjects. Secular theories and ideologies are not presented as truth. In addition to the benefits of avoiding the influences of drugs, alcohol, and crime, the laws governing the separation of church and state do not restrict Christian distance education students. For example, prayer is allowed. Students acquire a high school diploma, while simultaneously strengthening religious and moral beliefs.

Beyond the high school diploma, Christian distance education affords individuals the opportunity to study for the ministry. Students may aspire to become a full-time pulpit minister or a youth minister. Contrary to popular belief, speaking on Sunday is only a small portion of ministry, and education is necessary. Ministers counsel, teach, comfort, and physically labor for the various needs of a congregation. In addition, youth ministers answer to the unique needs of today’s youth. Many youngsters come from broken homes. With drugs and alcohol so prevalent in today’s society, home may no longer be a child’s safe haven from the world’s troubles. Youth ministers may fill the roles of a parent, friend, counselor, teacher, and confidante. Again, youth rallies and fun activities are only a small portion of a youth minister’s job. Christian distance education may enable an individual to enter the ministry and benefit the community, without uprooting a family, or losing a means of support.

Laymen may also seek distance education, thus benefiting the community through Christian psychology and counseling. Many people are more comfortable seeking help, if the counselor or psychologist shares a foundation in Christian principles and ideals. Also, Christian counselors and psychologists want to practice according to personal moral and religious beliefs and not by worldly standards. Therefore, Christian distance education answers the needs of both patients and doctors.

In summary, in answer to the growing problem of violence, drugs, and alcohol in the public schools, parents are opting to enroll children in Christian distance education. Many graduates may also seek a post-secondary education in the ministry or Christian-based careers in psychology or counseling. Whether a student signs up for a correspondence course in a particular subject, or a degree program, accredited Christian distance learning is now a reality.

Probably the most well-known Christian school is the Catholic school network affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. However, you will find non-denominational Christian schools as well. In our part of the country, the Mennonite church has a large number of Mennonite schools.

Many people erroneously assume that if they are not a Christian that they can not attend a Christian school. Or, that you can’t attend a Christian school of another denomination. This is entirely untrue. Most, if not all, Christian schools accept students of all faiths and beliefs. Some schools may require that you attend a church on a regular basis or attend a church of the same faith. However, most Christian schools only require that you have the same or similar Christian beliefs that they do.

Christian schools are typically priced a little lower than other private schools since they usually are supported by a local church and consider their schools a part of their outreach ministry. Most also offer financial aid to help those who might not otherwise be able to afford private school.

One thing your child will get at a Christian school is an excellent education. Christian schools are held to the same standards as public schools so the classroom time is very similar to public schools. However, Christian schools will also have Bible teaching as part of their curriculum. But you will also find English, Math, Science, Art, Social Studies, History, Home Economics, and other classes that your public school offers. They will also offer many of the same sports such as basketball, field hockey, soccer, track and field and others.

Attending a Christian school is like attending a public school with the added benefit of having Bible teaching. Also, since it is a private school, the class sizes may be smaller and the teaching may be better for this reason. And since Christian schools are run with Biblical principles, discipline problems may be lesser.
